I was very very upset.  Just before Christmas, I was supposed to be meeting up with my gorgeous ex-colleagues Ness, Les, Rach, Em and Ying to celebrate Christmas at Pei Modern.  However I got sick-I couldn’t believe it- I just recovered from sickness not long ago!  How annoying!  My friends kept sending me food porn of Pei Modern (thanks guys!), and I was super jealous.

photo 1 [640x480]Since I am on forced leave for like, ever, I asked Shoe Queen out to Pei Modern one day.  Yay!  I really wanted to have the 4 courses for $50, but sadly, Shoe Queen had to go back to work quickly after lunch, so we couldn’t get that.  We couldn’t really find stuff that we really wanted to have in the mains, as we wanted to share but there are not many pescatarian dishes (Shoe Queen is pescatarian), so we decided to order a few entrees instead.

Our first dish was the crab gazpacho $18.  Gazpacho is a cold soup, and as they knew we were sharing, they kindly separated this dish into two so it’s easier for us to share.  The gazpacho was delicious- the bits of crab meat was so fresh and tasted so sweet, and although it seemed weird that the soup was dotted with grapes, it worked really well with the flavours.

Our next dish was the cold smoked tuna $22.  The tuna was fresh, with popping grains of mustard seeds to enhance the flavours.  There are a huge lump of goats cheese on this dish though, which Shoe Queen and I were not a big fan of.  I found it too rich and the freshness of the tuna was overshadowed by the goats cheese. Fortunately there are bits of grapefruit to refresh this dish.

Our last dish was another delicious dish- chargrilled octopus with Peppers de Padron $20.  The octopus was super tender with a delightful smokey flavour and the pepper, although not chilli enough, adds a different dimension to this dish.

So far, I must say I am pretty impressed with Pei Modern.  I can’t wait to actually try their tasting menu! 9/10
